Sequoia’s philosophy is bilingual-bicultural. We not only preach it, we practice it. We want and expect our students to master both ASL and English, to understand both hearing culture and Deaf culture. We have many hearing students on campus who can sign since we offer sign language classes to the hearing students. Our students have the option of taking classes with their hearing peers. They are comfortable around hearing people. When our students graduate from Sequoia they are ready to be successful in the Deaf AND hearing world. We are a “one stop center” in that we can meet the needs of ALL deaf and hard of hearing children. We share a campus with 7 other Sequoia Schools that have specific strenghts that will fit the needs of your Deaf child's sibling's.
Sequoia is simply another choice for parents. Parents can send their child to the public school, to the state school, educate them at home, or send them to Sequoia. Sequoia was built the way a school for Deaf and hard of hearing children should be built. We MUST do a good job or parents will not send their children to Sequoia and our enrollment would not continue to increase as it has. We truly believe that charter schools are the schools of the future. We are producing educated students. We are providing quality jobs to Deaf people. We have a fantastic Deaf-friendly and hearing-friendly environment. Sequoia’s program is geared toward language development and academic excellence, first and foremost, and we provide whatever additional services are needed such as speech therapy and physical therapy. We also provide these parents with the support and assistance they need, regardless of their educational philosophy, while not undermining our bilingual-bicultural approach to educating Deaf and hard of hearing children. |
